A Passion for Making Learning Fun - Teachers Honor Teachers

- Jodi Hetman, 4th Grade Teacher, Bath Elementary, Revere Local Schools

An innovative intervention specialist, Emily Sokolowski knows how to challenge people to meet their goals by offering guidance and encouragement to children and staff.

“It is hard to believe Emily has only been teaching for four years because her attitude, ideas, and flexibility match those of veteran teachers.”

-Jodi Hetman

Emily is creative, funny, and inspiring. With patience and expertise, she brings together the community of learners in Room 111.

Emily Sokolowski is an excellent teacher. As a fourth-grade intervention specialist, she uses her patience, humor, and kindness to create a safe and secure environment for her students. She challenges children to meet their goals by offering guidance, modeling, and encouraging children to take ownership of their learning. She uses comedy to connect with kids, data to drive instruction, and creative projects to engage learners at every level. She is an asset to the students at Revere Local Schools.

In addition to exhibiting excellent teaching, Miss Sokolowski is also a strong leader and contributor to the staff at Bath Elementary School. She believes in the benefits of technology and shares her passion for using it to successfully accommodate different learning styles. She is an innovative technical expert and helps the information technology department with tier-one interventions on iPads. She is confident in sharing tips with teachers and strives to learn new applications as they become available. Furthermore, she serves on the school innovation team, presenting material to the staff at every opportunity.

Finally, Emily recently worked with our guidance counselor to establish a NEST for the school. The NEST stands for “Nature Exploration for Students & Teachers.” It is a space in our school’s land lab dedicated to hammocks. The hammocks, which tie to our social-emotional goals and make greater use of our outdoor learning space, were awarded to Emily and her team by GAR’s Educator Initiative Grant (EIG) Program. Once again, Emily shared her passion for making learning fun and less stressful for students. It is hard to believe Emily has only been teaching for four years because her attitude, ideas, and flexibility match those of veteran teachers. It is encouraging to know that she will influence students and teachers for years to come.

Teachers Honor Teachers

The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation has launched a new program this fall inviting teachers to recognize a colleague they know is doing exceptional work in the classroom.

In the above post, Jodi Hetman expresses her admiration for fellow teacher, Emily Sokolowski. Thank you to both educators for your dedication to students and for taking the time to showcase what it means to deliver challenging, innovative, and student-centered lessons that result in powerful and deep learning.

Through the Teachers Honor Teachers Program, The Foundation is seeking Ohio public school teachers to share great things about a teaching colleague in an Ohio public school that ensures deep learning for students. If we choose to post your story, we will award $500 toward that teacher's classroom for their great work and $500 toward your classroom for honoring their excellence. Apply here.
